As an employer or prospective employer in Alaska, you must provide workers compensation insurance coverage for your employees. The Alaska Workers’ Compensation Act requires each employer having one or more employees in Alaska to obtain workers’ compensation insurance, unless the employer has been approved as a self-insurer. Determining employee status is accomplished utilizing the relative-nature-of-the-work-test as set out in Alaska Regulation 8 AAC 45.890. Generally, every business with employees in Alaska must register with the Alaska Labor and Workforce Development. Unemployment insurance is an employer-funded program which protects workers against complete loss of wages during periods of involuntary unemployment. Claimants are eligible for unemployment insurance if they meet monetary and personal eligibility requirements.
